The Sh2-54 nebula in visible and infrared light
Drag green handle to reveal images
This interactive comparison shows a visible and an infrared image of the Sh2-54 nebula, captured with the VST and VISTA telescopes respectively, at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile. Infrared light can travel through dust clouds more easily than visible light. As a result, the prominent dust lanes in the visible-light image almost disappear in the infrared one.
