Il Principe Filippo del Belgio a capo di una delegazione industriale in vista ai siti dell'ESO in Cile

Il Principe ereditario del Belgio ha visitato l'Osservatorio di Paranal dell'ESO, accompagnato da una delegazione d'imprese interessata a sviluppare possibili contatti per le industrie europee all'interno del progetto dell'ESO per l'E-ELT, l' European Extremely Large Telescope.
Sua Altezza Reale il Principe Filippo, Duca di Brabante, Principe ereditario del Belgio, ha iniziato lunedì 5 dicembre 2011 la visita ai siti dell'ESO in Cile partecipando ad una giornata dedicata all'industria negli uffici dell'ESO a Vitacura di Santiago, Cile. L'evento ha sottolineato le numerose opportunità che saranno disponibili per le aziende europee grazie all'E-ELT dell'ESO, che con uno specchio principale della classe dei 40 metri diventerà "il più grande occhio del mondo rivolto al cielo".
"L'E-ELT fornirà opportunità inestimabili sia per le aziende che per le organizzazioni degli stati membri dell'ESO e, dato che è il più grande telescopio di questo tipo, sarà un potente stimolo per le ricerche future", ha dichiarato il Prof. Massimo Tarenghi, rappresentante dell'ESO in Cile.
Come membro fondatore, il Belgio ha già dato ad ESO un contribuito notevole. Per esempio i quattro Telescopi Ausiliari (AT) all'Osservatorio di Paranal sono stati costruiti dalla compagnia belga AMOS (di Liegi). Due contratti importanti legati alla fase di progetto dell'E-ELT sono già stati assegnati ad aziende belghe.
La comunità astronomica belga ha anche fatto ampio uso delle strutture dell'ESO. Molto recentemente, TRAPPIST, il telescopio belga all'Osservatorio di La Silla dell'ESO è stato usato per fare un'importante scoperta a proposito del pianeta nano Eris (eso1142).
Mercoledì 7 dicembre la delegazione è partita da Santiago per il deserto di Atacama, una delle zone più secche della Terra, che ospita l'Osservatorio di Paranal dell'ESO. Sua Altezza Reale è stato accompagnato in una visita degli impianti dal Prof. Massimo Tarenghi e dal Dott. Michael Sterzik, che ha spiegato le finalità e il funzionamento dei telescopi. Dopo l'apertura delle cupole al tramonto, la delegazione è stata condotta in una delle sale di controllo per assistere a parte del lavoro scientifico attualmente in corso a Paranal.
Il Principe Filippo ha concluso la visita dei siti dell'ESO in Cile con il Cerro Armazones, futura dimora dell'E-ELT, nella mattinata dell'8 dicembre.
Il Principe Filippo era accompagnato dal Ministro Marcourt, Vice Presidente e Ministro dell'Economia, Piccole e Medie Imprese, Commercio Estero e Nuove Tecnologie per il Governo di Vallonia, dal Ministro di Stato Jos Chabert e da Dirk van Eeckhout, Ambasciatore del Belgio in Cile, e da una delegazione commerciale, tra cui rappresentanti di AMOS, SEPTENTRIO, ENE, XENIC e dell'Università di Liegi.

L'ESO (European Southern Observatory) è la principale organizzazione intergovernativa di Astronomia in Europa e l'osservatorio astronomico più produttivo al mondo. È sostenuto da 15 paesi: Austria, Belgio, Brasile, Danimarca, Finlandia, Francia, Germania, Gran Bretagna, Italia, Olanda, Portogallo, Repubblica Ceca, Spagna, Svezia, e Svizzera. L'ESO è il partner europeo di un telescopio astronomico di concetto rivoluzionario, ALMA, il più grande progetto astronomico esistente. L'ESO al momento sta progettando l'European Extremely Large Telescope o E-ELT (significa Telescopio Europeo Estremamente Grande), della classe dei 40 metri, che opera nell'ottico e infrarosso vicino e che diventerà "il più grande occhio del mondo rivolto al cielo".
