Pieces of the ELT’s M1 cell

Against the landscape of the Chilean desert, the foreground of this image shows multiple pieces of large, white, honeycomb lattice structures, with the piece central in the image being hexagonal in shape. The lattice pieces are surrounded by construction instruments, cranes, and trucks, and on the right of the image, the large dome of the ELT is partly visible.

This image shows pieces of the support cell that will one day hold the primary mirror, M1, of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction on Cerro Armazones in the Chilean Atacama Desert. This white lattice structure has now been moved inside of the ELT’s dome, as shown by the recent drone images from July 2024 linked below.
