ESO prende parte al più grande summit internazionale della storia del Cile

Il summit della Comunità degli Stati Latinoamericani e Caraibici (CELAC) e l’Unione Europea, l’evento più grande di questo tipo mai organizzato in Cile, è stato aperto oggi dal presidente Sebastian Piñera. Il summit è un forum per la discussione di affari internazionali, con 61 capi di stato e di governo e le loro delegazioni invitati, e con 1500 giornalisti provenienti da tutto il mondo tra i 3000 delegati partecipanti. Il summit ha luogo tra il 22 ed il 27 Gennaio a Santiago.
L’astronomia sarà un tema caldo durante l’evento, presente in varie occasioni su schermi giganti durante la conferenza, attraverso le immagini di e dagli osservatori dell’ESO nel Cile del Nord. Nel “Retiro” (“ritiro”), la piccola stanza dove i capi di stato si riuniscono in un ambiente privato per discutere di faccende internazionali, un modello in scala dell’European Extremely Large Telescope dell’ESO decorerà il centro della stanza nel mezzo delle costellazioni del cielo australe visibile dal Cile, restituendo un entusiasmante punto di vista sul futuro dell’Astronomia in Cile.
Come organizzazione chiave spesso associata all’immagine del Cile sia a casa che all’estero, ed in linea col motto del summit “Puntando in Alto” [1], L’ESO è stato specialmente invitato dal governo cileno a prendere parte al summit come importante espositore.
Nello spazio aperto centrale informalmente chiamato “spazio delle stelle” sito vicino agli uffici dell’Unione Europea, l’ESO ha dato luogo ad una grande esposizione, sita su una delle strade principali attraverso la quale ci sia aspetta che almeno 2500 persone, sia della stampa che delegati, vi passino ogni giorno .
L’esibizione si apre con una mappa satellitare del Cile che punta sul luogo dove si trovano osservatori ESO (vedi ann11080), fino ad arrivare in uno spazio aperto dove grandi pannelli con informazioni in inglese e spagnolo danno informazioni sul lavoro svolto all’ESO.
La mostra Awesome Universe (Universo Fantastico) — che celebra i 50 anni dell’organizzazione — rappresenta il cuore della presenza dell’ESO al summit CELAC-EU. Consistente di una galleria di immagini a larga scala, incluse le migliori immagini dai telescopi dell’ESO e le splendide fotografie degli osservatori, si spande attraverso lo spazio dove delegati e giornalisti passeggeranno e si intratterranno in discussioni informali. Al centro della presenza dell’ESO al summit vi è un altro modello in scala del futuro European Extremely Large Telescope. Infine, è anche in mostra un grande striscione con un’immagine astronomica della Nebulosa della Carena creata da osservazioni telescopiche fatte dallo stesso Presidente Piñera durante la sua visita a Paranal nel Giugno 2012 (vedi eso1250).

[1] Le stelle sono anche un tema del logo del summit, basate sul rinomato lavoro dello scultore cileno Mario Irarrázabal di una mano tesa verso l’alto. Il logo presenta una stella rappresentante i cieli del Cile del Nord, dove i più grandi progetti astronomici sono in via di sviluppo con la collaborazione europea.
