En uppdatering om världens största öga mot himlen
Denna veckas bild visar ungefär ett och ett halvt år av konstruktionen av ESO:s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) i Chiles Atacamaöken. Under denna tid har stora framsteg skett och viktiga milstolpar nåtts. Hela projektet är mer än 75 % klart och närmare än någonsin att hjälpa oss att förstå mer av universums hemligheter.
ELT:s kupol, i början av videon fortfarande delvis i form av ett stålskelett, har nu i stort sett fått en isolerad yta för att skydda teleskopet och dess instrument från den hårda ökenmiljön, inklusive de mycket sällsynta men kraftiga regnen. När de massiva dörrarna till kupolspalten installerades i april 2025 nådde kupolen sin högsta punkt på 80 meter, vilket firades med en takläggningsceremoni där ESO:s och Chiles flaggor hissades över kupolen. Senare under året flyttades spaltluckorna för första gången.
Samtidigt fortskrider konstruktionen av ELT:s huvudstruktur i rask takt inne i kupolen. Denna struktur kommer att hålla teleskopets speglar och instrument och väger för närvarande cirka 3500 ton. Den roterades nyligen runt sin vertikala axel för första gången.
Videon fångar inte de framsteg som gjorts utanför anläggningen, som testningen av ELT:s deformerbara spegel som är nyckeln för att korrigera atmosfärisk turbulens och få skarpa bilder. Byggandet av MICADO och METIS, de första instrumenten som ska installeras vid ELT, fortskrider också enligt plan. Ett avtal för MOSAIC, ett ytterligare ELT-instrument, undertecknades i slutet av 2025. Med teleskopkomponenterna och dess instrument är ELT på god väg att börja observera kosmos senare under detta decennium.
