Una actualización sobre el ojo más grande del mundo para mirar el cielo
La Imagen de la Semana de hoy muestra alrededor de un año y medio en la vida del ELT (Extremely Large Telescope) de ESO, en el desierto de Atacama, en Chile. En este tiempo, la construcción del telescopio ha vivido muchos avances e hitos importantes. El proyecto está en más del 75% terminado y más cerca que nunca de ayudarnos a entender con mayor profundidad los secretos de nuestro Universo.
La cúpula del ELT, aún parcialmente descubierta, mostrando su esqueleto de acero al principio de este vídeo, ya tiene instalada en su mayor parte la capa de revestimiento protector aislante, diseñado para proteger el telescopio y sus instrumentos del duro entorno desértico, incluyendo lluvias, que suelen ser muy escasas, pero intensas. En abril de 2025, cuando se instalaron las enormes puertas, la cúpula alcanzó su punto más alto de 80 metros, con una ceremonia de cierre que incluyó el izado de las banderas de la ESO y Chile en la parte superior de la cúpula. Ese mismo año, un tiempo después, las puertas de la cúpula se movieron por primera vez.
Mientras tanto, dentro de la cúpula, la estructura principal del ELT, que sostendrá sus espejos e instrumentos, avanza rápidamente. Esta estructura, que actualmente pesa alrededor de 3500 toneladas, fue recientemente girada por primera vez alrededor de su eje vertical.
Este vídeo no capta los avances realizados fuera de la ubicación del telescopio, como la prueba del espejo deformable del ELT, clave para corregir la turbulencia atmosférica y obtener imágenes nítidas. La construcción de MICADO y METIS, los primeros instrumentos instalados en el ELT, también avanza a buen ritmo. A finales de 2025 se firmó un acuerdo para MOSAIC, otro instrumento del ELT. Con los componentes e instrumentos del telescopio avanzando en su desarrollo en paralelo, el ELT está en el buen camino para comenzar a observar el cosmos a finales de esta década.
