Antenas camufladas
Pídale a alguien que describa un desierto y le hablará de paisajes arenosos y de colores ocres. Por lo general, esa descripción es acertada, pero no siempre, como en esta Imagen de la semana. Durante la mayor parte del año, las antenas blancas del Atacama Large Millimitre/Submillimetre Array (ALMA), operado por ESO junto con sus socios internacionales, destacan sobre el fondo rojizo del desierto de Atacama. Pero, de vez en cuando, el paisaje se transforma y las antenas se camuflan bajo un panorama blanco y nevado.
Atacama está situada entre los Andes y la Cordillera de la Costa Chilena, altas cadenas montañosas que protegen el desierto de los vientos húmedos, lo que lo convierte en uno de los lugares más secos de la Tierra. Estas condiciones hacen que lugares como este sean ideales para las observaciones astronómicas. Sin embargo, en esta región a veces también llueve, o incluso nieva.
Durante los meses de invierno, de junio a septiembre, las temperaturas pueden descender hasta los -20 °C y las precipitaciones caen en forma de nieve. Pese a ello, ALMA no deja de funcionar. Las antenas permanecen operativas, aunque es posible que necesiten tomar un poco el sol para derretir la nieve que se acumula en su superficie. Incluso los transportadores de antenas, de color amarillo oscuro y apodados Otto y Lore, pueden seguir moviendo las antenas. Con nieve o sin nieve, ALMA siempre está en busca de nuevos descubrimientos.
