Belgijski książę Philippe przewodzi delegacji przemysłowej odwiedzającej obserwatoria ESO w Chile

Kandydat do belgijskiego tronu odwiedził Obserwatorium ESO Paranal w towarzystwie delegacji przedstawicieli biznesu poszukujących przyszłych możliwości dla europejskiego przemysłu w kontekście projektu Ogromnie Wielkiego Teleskopu Europejskiego (E-ELT).
Jego Wysokość Książę Philippe, Diuk Brabant, Książę Korony Belgii, rozpoczął w poniedziałek 5 grudnia 2011 roku wizytę w lokalizacjach ESO w Chile, biorąc udział w dniu przemysłowym w biurach ESO Vitacura w Santiago w Chile. Wydarzenie pokazało wiele możliwości, które będą dostępne dla europejskich firm dzięki E-ELT, który będzie „największym okiem świata na niebo” z lustrem głównym klasy 40 metrów.
“E-ELT dostarczy nieocenionych możliwości dla firm i organizacji z krajów członkowskich ESO, a jako największy teleskop w swojej klasie, będzie potężnym kołem zamachowym przyszłych badań.” deklaruje prof. Massimo Tarenghi, przedstawiciel ESO w Chile.
Jako jeden z członków-fundatorów ESO, Belgia dokonała już wielu sporych kontrybucji na rzecz organizacji. Na przykład cztery Teleskopy Pomocnicze w Obserwatorium Paranal były zbudowane przez belgijską firmę AMOS (Liège). Dwa ważne kontrakty związane z fazą projektową E-ELT zostały przyznane firmom belgijskim.
Belgijska społeczność astronomiczna także w szerokim stopniu używa infrastruktury ESO. Ostatnio belgijski teleskop TRAPPIST w Obserwatorium ESO La Silla został wykorzystany do ważnego odkrycia związanego z planetą karłowatą Eris (eso1142).
W środę 7 grudnia delegacja poleciała z Santiago na pustynię Atakama, jedno z najsuchszych miejsc na Ziemi i lokalizacja Obserwatorium ESO Paranal. Jego Książęca Wysokość został oprowadzony po obserwatorium przez prof. Massimo Tarenghiego i dr Michaela Sternika, którzy wyjaśnili cel i sposób działania teleskopów. Po otwarciu kopuł po zachodzie słońca delegacja udała się do jednej ze sterowni teleskopów, aby być świadkiem pracy naukowej wykonywanej obecnie w Paranal.
Księciu Philippe'owi towarzyszył Minister Marcourt, Wiceprezydent i Minister Ekonomii, SME, Handlu Zagranicznego i Nowych Technologii w rządzie Walonii, Minister Stanu Jos Chabert oraz Dirk Van Eeckhout, Ambasador Belgii w Chile, a także duża delegacja biznesowa, w tym przedstawiciele AMOS, SEPTENTRIO, ENE, XENIC oraz Uniwersytetu w Liège.

VISTA pracuje w podczerwieni i jest największym na świecie instrumentem do przeglądów nieba, natomiast VLT Survey Telescope to największy teleskop dedykowany przeglądom nieba wyłącznie w zakresie widzialnym. ESO jest europejskim partnerem dla rewolucyjnego teleskopu ALMA, największego istniejącego projektu astronomicznego. ESO planuje obecnie 40-metrowej klasy Ekstremalnie Wielki Teleskop Europejski (European Extremely Large optical/near-infrared Telescope - E-ELT), który stanie się “największym okiem świata na niebo”.
