Een galactisch juweel
ESO’s FORS2-instrument legt adembenemende details vast van spiraalstelsel NGC 3981

FORS2, een instrument dat aan de Very Large Telescope van ESO is gekoppeld, heeft het spiraalstelsel NGC 3981 in al zijn schoonheid vastgelegd. De foto is gemaakt in het kader van het ESO-programma ‘Cosmic Gems’, dat gebruik maakt van de zeldzame momenten dat de waarnemingsomstandigheden niet geschikt zijn voor het verzamelen van wetenschappelijke gegevens. In plaats van niets te doen, laat het ‘Cosmic Gems’-programma ESO-telescopen toe om visueel verbluffende foto’s van de zuidelijke hemel te maken.
Deze prachtige foto toont het magnifieke spiraalstelsel NGC 3981, dat in de inktzwarte ruimte zweeft. Dit sterrenstelsel, dat zich in het sterrenbeeld Crater (Beker) bevindt, werd in mei 2018 vastgelegd met de FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph 2 (FORS2) – een instrument van de Very Large Telescope van ESO.
FORS2 is gekoppeld aan Unit Telescope 1 (Antu) van de VLT op de Paranal-sterrenwacht van ESO in Chili. Van de vele ultramoderne instrumenten die aan de vier Unit Telescopes van de VLT zijn gekoppeld, onderscheidt FORS2 zich door zijn extreme veelzijdigheid. Dit ‘Zwitserse zakmes’ onder de instrumenten kan een grote verscheidenheid aan astronomische objecten op verschillende manieren onderzoeken, en is ook in staat om prachtige opnamen zoals deze maken.
Met zijn scherpe blik heeft FORS2 behalve de opvallende schijf van hete, jonge sterren ook de spiraalarmen van NGC 3981 vastgelegd. Deze laatste zijn bezaaid met uitgestrekte stofbanden en stervormingsgebieden. Omdat dit sterrenstelsel van ons uit gezien schuin staat, kunnen astronomen recht in het hart van het stelsel kijken en diens heldere centrum onderzoeken, waar zich een superzwaar zwart gat schuilhoudt. Ook is te zien hoe sommige van de uitgestrekte spiraalarmen van NGC 3981 enigszins uitgerekt zijn, waarschijnlijk ten gevolge van de zwaartekrachtsinvloed van een eerdere galactische ontmoeting.
NGC 3981 heeft vele galactische buren. Gelegen op een afstand van ongeveer 65 miljoen lichtjaar, maakt het stelsel deel uit van de NGC 4038-groep, net als de bekende, onderling wisselwerkende Antenne-stelsels. Deze groep maakt op zijn beurt deel uit van de Crater-wolk, die weer een klein onderdeel is van de Virgo-supercluster, de kolossale verzameling van sterrenstelsels waartoe ook ons eigen Melkwegstelsel behoort.
NGC 3981 is niet het enige interessante object dat op deze foto te zien is. Behalve enkele voorgrondsterren van ons eigen sterrenstelsel, de Melkweg, heeft FORS2 ook een toevallig passerende planetoïde van ons zonnestelsel vastgelegd. Deze vertoont zich als een zwak streepje rechtsboven NGC 3981. Ongewild laat de planetoïde op deze manier zien hoe astronomische foto’s als deze tot stand komen: er worden drie opnamen na elkaar gemaakt in de kleuren blauw, groen en rood – precies zoals het lichtspoor van de planetoïde illustreert.
Deze foto is gemaakt in het kader van het ‘Cosmic Gems’-programma van ESO, een initiatief waarbij interessante, intrigerende of visueel aantrekkelijke objecten voor educatieve of publicitaire doeleinden met ESO-telescopen worden gefotografeerd. Dit programma maakt gebruik van ‘telescooptijd’ die niet geschikt is voor wetenschappelijke waarnemingen. Alle verzamelde gegevens, die ook bruikbaar kunnen zijn voor wetenschappelijke doeleinden, staan via ESO’s wetenschappelijke archief ter beschikking van astronomen.

Op Paranal staan ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) en haar toonaangevende Very Large Telescope Interferometer, evenals twee surveytelescopen – VISTA, die in het infrarood werkt, en de op zichtbare golflengten opererende VLT Survey Telescope. ESO speelt tevens een belangrijke partnerrol bij twee faciliteiten op Chajnantor, APEX en ALMA, het grootste astronomische project van dit moment. En op Cerro Armazones, nabij Paranal, bouwt ESO de 39-meter Extremely Large Telescope, de ELT, die ‘het grootste oog op de hemel’ ter wereld zal worden.
