Werelden met veel zonnen
Deze Foto van de Week stelt nog een van de 20 afbeeldingen van ALMA’s eerste grote programma DSHARP (Disk Substructures at High Angular Resolution Project) in de kijker. DSHARP bestudeerde een aantal nabijgelegen protoplanetaire schijven om meer te weten te komen over de vroegste stadia van planeetvorming en de duizelingwekkende hoeveelheid data van het project is nu vrijgegeven.
Dit object, genaamd AS 205, is opmerkelijk omdat het een meervoudig stersysteem is, een van de twee meervoudige systemen die door DSHARP in beeld zijn gebracht (het andere is HT Lup). Hoewel hier slechts twee schijven te zien zijn, wordt de schijf rechtsonder eigenlijk gedeeld door twee sterren in een dubbelstersysteem. We kijken dus in feite naar een systeem met drie jonge sterren.
Hoewel de meeste studies in hoge resolutie zich tot nu toe focusten op enkelvoudige sterren, zijn meervoudige stersystemen verre van ongewoon in het heelal. Aangenomen wordt dat meer dan de helft van alle sterren in een meervoudig stersysteem voorkomen, een schatting die mogelijk zelfs nog hoger is voor jonge sterren. De aanwezigheid van metgezellen kan complexe gevolgen hebben voor een schijf en zijn substructuren. Dit is toe te schrijven aan de invloed van de zwaartekracht van een stellaire buur, die de materie binnenin de schijf kan vervormen en herverdelen. Gegevens van AS 205 en HT Lup tonen aan dat sterren en hun naburige schijven sterk in interactie met elkaar zijn.
Ondanks de onstabiele omgeving werden toch reeds planeten in meervoudige stersystemen gedetecteerd ‒ sommige draaien om slechts een van de sterren heen, andere bevinden zich dan weer in een baan rondom het hele systeem. Deze laatste hebben meer kans op een stabiele omloopbaan dan de eerstgenoemde die verstrikt raken in de vluchtige interstellaire dynamiek.
