Nieuwe opname van Vesta met SPHERE
De donutvormige planetoïdengordel tussen Mars en Jupiter zit boordevol rotsachtige objecten en brokstukken. Ofschoon de gordel volledig versplinterd en verbrokkeld is, is de totale massa ervan aanzienlijk — ongeveer vier procent van die van de maan! Het merendeel van die massa vinden we terug in twee karakteristieke hemellichamen: Ceres, een dwergplaneet die vermoedelijk één derde van de massa van de gordel vormt en de planetoïde Vesta, die ongeveer negen procent ervan in beslag neemt. Vesta werd onlangs waargenomen met het SPHERE/ZIMPOL-instrument op ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). Aan de linkerkant is de opname met SPHERE te zien, ter vergelijking zien we rechts een afbeelding verkregen uit opnamen vanuit de ruimte. SPHERE (the Spectro- Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet Research instrument), is een krachtig apparaat voor het detecteren en fotograferen van planeten. ZIMPOL is een van de subsystemen: een gespecialiseerde camera uitermate geschikt voor het nemen van uiterst scherpe opnamen van kleine objecten zoals Vesta.
Het beeld werd bekomen met behulp van OASIS, een instrument dat ontwikkeld werd voor ruimtemissies. OASIS houdt rekening met factoren zoals de weerkaatsing van het oppervlak van Vesta en de geometrische voorwaarden van de SPHERE-waarnemingen. Het maakte gebruik van een 3D-model van de vorm van Vesta gebaseerd op opnamen van de ruimtesonde Dawn van NASA (die tussen 2011 en 2012 een 14 maanden durende studie van Vesta uitvoerde).
De opname van Vesta met SPHERE is indrukwekkend gezien de afstand tussen de aarde en Vesta, en de tevens kleine afmetingen van de planetoïde. Deze bevindt zich twee keer zo ver van de zon als onze planeet en heeft een diameter van slechts 525 kilometer. De afbeelding toont de belangrijkste kenmerken van Vesta: de gigantische inslagkrater op de zuidpool van Vesta en de berg onderaan rechts. Dit is de centrale piek van de Rheasilviakrater en is ongeveer 22 kilometer hoog — meer dan twee maal zo hoog als de hoogste berg op aarde, de Mauna Kea, die vanaf de bodem van de Stille Oceaan circa 10 kilometer de hoogte in rijst en bijna zo hoog is als Olympus Mons, de reusachtige vulkaan op Mars.
