Optical spectrum of SN 2001el and fractional polarisation

The optical spectrum of SN 2001el in NGC 1448 (upper panel). The middle and lower panels show the corresponding fractional polarisations. They measure the different numbers of photons oscillating in perpendicular directions; they are directly related to the geometry of the supernova. The shaded area indicates the spectral signatures of high-velocity matter in the expanding envelope.
