Cluster of galaxies CL0053-37 in NGC 300 field

The distant cluster of galaxies CL0053-37, as imaged on the WFI photo of the NGC 300 sky field. The elongated distribution of the cluster galaxies, as well as the presence of two large, early-type elliptical galaxies indicate that this cluster is still in the process of formation. Some of the galaxies appear to be merging. From the measured redshift (z = 0.1625), a distance of about 2.1 billion light-years is deduced.
