2-D Spectrum of distant galaxy with Lyman-alpha emission

The image shows the two-dimensional spectrum of a high-redshift galaxy in the Hubble Deep Field South, as obtained with FORS1 at the VLT UT1. The image is a combination of 5 exposures with a total exposure time of 3 hours and has been sky-subtracted. The bright, vertical feature visible to the left (marked) is redshifted Lyman-alpha emission in the galaxy.
