La Silla — 1966 (East)
East view of the La Silla mountain, located in northern Chile. It was selected in 1964 as the site of ESO''s observatory. Construction started immediately. In October 1966, when this aerial picture was taken, a camp had been erected near the summit. After three more year of work, the Observatory was inaugurated in 1969. Since then, about 20 telescopes ranging from 25cm to 3.6m have been operated on La Silla.
