First large VLT mirror successfully coated
At the beginning of the operation, the 8.2-m Zerodur mirror still rests on the supports in its cell, under the Handling Device. The uncoated surface reflects about 5% of the infalling light and has a matte appearance. (Photo obtained on May 19, 1998)
