Metals in DLA system at z=3.39

This image shows a sample of metal lines of the z(abs) = 3.3901 DLA system observed in the UVES spectrum of QSO 0000-2620 . All lines are aligned with the absorption redshift of the DLA. The thin, smooth lines are the synthetic fits to the observations that were used to derive the abundances. The Zn II line (observed wavelength 889.4 nm) used to derive the crucial abundance of this element is the highest-redshift detection so far reported in the literature.
