La galaxie 9io9 vue par ALMA
Cette image montre l'orientation du champ magnétique dans la galaxie lointaine 9io9, observée ici lorsque l'Univers n'avait que 20 % de son âge actuel. Il s'agit de la détection la plus lointaine jamais réalisée du champ magnétique d'une galaxie. Les observations ont été réalisées avec ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array), dont l'ESO est partenaire. Les grains de poussière de 9io9 sont en quelque sorte alignés sur le champ magnétique de la galaxie et émettent donc une lumière polarisée, c'est-à-dire que les ondes lumineuses oscillent dans une direction privilégiée plutôt que de manière aléatoire. ALMA a détecté ce signal de polarisation, à partir duquel les astronomes ont pu déterminer l'orientation du champ magnétique, représentée ici par des lignes courbes superposées à l'image d'ALMA.
Le signal de lumière polarisée émis par les poussières alignées magnétiquement dans 9io9 était extrêmement faible, ne représentant qu'un pour cent de la luminosité totale de la galaxie, de sorte que les astronomes ont eu recours à un astucieux tour de passe-passe de la nature pour obtenir ce résultat. L'équipe a été aidée par le fait que 9io9, bien que très éloignée de nous, a été agrandie par un processus connu sous le nom de lentille gravitationnelle. Ce phénomène se produit lorsque la lumière provenant d'une galaxie lointaine, en l'occurrence 9io9, apparaît plus brillante et déformée parce qu'elle est courbée par la gravité d'un très gros objet situé au premier plan.
