Vue du jet et de l'ombre du trou noir de M87
Cette image montre pour la première fois le jet et l'ombre du trou noir au centre de la galaxie M87. Les observations ont été obtenues avec les télescopes du Global Millimetre VLBI Array (GMVA), de l'Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), dont l'ESO est partenaire, et du Greenland Telescope. Cette image fournit aux scientifiques le contexte nécessaire pour comprendre comment le puissant jet se forme. Les nouvelles observations ont également révélé que l'anneau du trou noir, représenté ici dans l'encadré, est 50 % plus grand que l'anneau observé à des longueurs d'onde radio plus courtes par l'Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). Cela suggère que dans la nouvelle image, nous voyons une plus grande partie de la matière qui tombe vers le trou noir que ce que nous pouvions voir avec l'EHT.
