Tee-se-itse tiedettä – Piileskeleekö Proxima c tässä kuvassa?
Tämä epätavallinen Viikon kuva esittelee ESO:n eksoplaneettametsästäjän, HARPS:in (High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher) viimeisintä havaintoaineistoa, joka kerättiin käynnissä olevan Red Dots –kampanjan aikana; se etsii maankaltaisia planeettoja kolmen meitä lähinnä olevan punaisen kääpiötähden, Proxima Centaurin, Barnardin tähden ja Ross 154:n ympäriltä. Kampanja alkoi aikaisemmin vuoden 2017 aikana ja perustuu vuoden 2016 havaintoon lähintä tähtinaapuriamme, Proxima Kentauria kiertävästä Proxima b:stä. Red Dots on suunniteltu ”avoimen muistivihon” tiede-eksperimentiksi, mikä tarkoittaa sitä, että yleisö pääsee käsiksi havaintoaineistoon ja voi jopa osallistua havaintoihin. Seuraten huolellisesti tähden liikettä ajan mukana tämän kaltaiset kaaviokuvat voivat paljastaa eksoplaneettojen läsnäolon. Aivan niin kuin tähti vetää sitä kiertäviä planeettoja puoleensa, vetävät planeetat tähteä, mikä johtaa sen huojumiseen ja sen valon aallonpituuden pieneen, mutta havaittavaan siirtymiseen. Analysoimalla ennustettavia ja toistuvia muutoksia tähtitieteilijät voivat päätellä planeetan olemassaolon. Ylävasemmalla oleva kaavio näyttää vuoden 2016 havaintoaineiston, mikä vahvisti Proxima b:n olemassaolon näyttäen, miten planeetta aiheuttaa sen emotähden liikkeen kohti Maata ja siitä poispäin ajan kuluessa. Käyrä viiva edustaa tähden huojuvaa signaalia, jossa esiintyy säännöllinen 11.2 päivän välein toistuva muuttuvien radiaalinopeuksien jakso.
Ylhäällä oikealla oleva kaavio näyttää HARPS:illa Red Dots –kampanjan aikana tehtyjä mittauksia. Uusi havaintoaineisto varmistaa jälleen Proxima b:n signaalin, mutta sisältää myös ylimääräisiä piirteitä – mitkä näkyvät laskevana trendinä sekä 2016 että 2017 havaintopisteissä – jotka antavat ymmärtää, että jokin saattaa vielä odottaa löytämistään. Tähtitieteilijöiden on käytettävä kvantitatiivisia matemaattisia työkaluja voidakseen sanoa jotain varmaa näiden piirteiden aiheuttajista.
Yksi sellaisista matemaattisista työkaluista on periodogrammi, joka etsii toistuvia signaaleja havaintoaineistosta – mitkä näkyvät tässä silmiinpistävinä piikkeinä – jotka osoittavat planeetan läsnäolon. Alaosan kaaviokuva näyttää uudesta havaintoaineistosta tehdyn periodogrammin. Ensimmäinen signaali (valkoisella) vastaa Proxima b:ta. Seuraava mahdollisten, noin 200 päivän jaksojen ryhmä (punaisella) on tuotettu yläosan kaavioiden piirteistä. Useiden, suunnilleen saman korkuisten piikkien läsnäolo tarkoittaa, että signaalia ei pystytä tarkalleen paikantamaan ja että sen alkuperä on epäselvä.
