En kosmisk fest med bobler

Gasserne bliver varmet voldsomt og presser sig ud i de koldere egne af gas i de klareste dele af denne lysende tåge; RCW 34. Nå den varme brintgas når randen af gasskyen bruser den ud i det tomme rum som indholdet af en champagneflaske når proppen ryger af - og faktisk kaldes processen "champagne flow". Men der er mere end nogle få bobler i den unge region med stjernedannelse RCW 34. I den samme sky ser det ud til, at der har været flere sprøjt af stjernedannelse.

Et nyt billede fra ESOs Very Large Telescope (VLT) i Chile viser en flot rød sky af lysende brintgas, bag en samling blå forgrundsstjerner. Inde i tågens klareste områder, med navnet RCW 34 - i det sydlige stjernebillede Vela - gemmer der sig en gruppe meget tunge og unge stjerner [1]. Stjernerne påvirker tågen meget voldsomt. Når gasarter bliver udsat for kraftig ultraviolet stråling, som det sker i tågen, bliver de  ioniserede. Det betyder, at elektronerne slipper væk fra deres brintatomkerner.

Himmelfotograferne holder meget af brint, fordi den gasart lyser klart i en karakteristisk rød farve. Det ser man i mange tåger, og fotograferne kan skabe smukke billeder af gassernes mærkelige snoninger. Brintgasserne er også råmaterialet til de dramatiske champagneudbrud. Men ioniseret brintgas har også en vigtig rolle astronomisk set: Det er et tegn på, at der kan foregå stjernedannelse i nærheden. Stjerner dannes når gasskyerne klapper sammen, og derfor sker der hyppigst stjernedannelse i de gasrigeste skyer, som for eksempel RCW 34. Det gør, at denne tåge er særligt interessant for de astronomer, som studerer stjernedannelse og stjerneudvikling.

De store mængder støv inde i tågen blokerer, så vi ikke kan se, hvad der foregår helt inde i stjernernes fødestuer. RCW 34 har en meget høj extinction, hvilket betyder, at næsten alt det synlige lys fra det indre af området opsuges inden det når frem til os på Jorden. På trods af det, kan vi bruge teleskoper, som er følsomme i  infrarødt lys, og så kan vi se forbi støvet og studere de skjulte stjerner.

På den måde kan vi se igennem alt det røde lys, og vi finder ud af, at der i området er masser af unge stjerner, som kun vejer en brøkdel af, hvad Solen vejer. Småstjernerne ser ud til at klumpe sig sammen omkring ældre, tungere stjerner, og kun få af de små stjerner befinder sig i udkanterne af tågen. Den fordeling får astronomerne til at mene, at der er sket stjernedannelse i skyen i flere adskilte epoker. I første omgang blev der dannet tre enorme stjerner, og det satte så gang i dannelsen af de lettere stjerner i nærheden[2].

Billedet er sat sammen af data fra instrumentet FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS), som er monteret på VLT. Optagelsen er en af de mange i ESOSs Cosmic Gems program [3].

[1] RCW 34 kendes også under navnet Gum 19. Midt i tågen findes den klare unge stjerne V391 Velorum.

[2] De tungeste stjerner lever kortest - i kun millioner af år. De letteste stjerner lever længere tid end Universet endnu har eksisteret.

[3]  ESO Cosmic Gems programmet er et formidlingsprogram som har til formål at producere billeder af interessante, spændende eller blot smukke objekter ved hjælp af ESOs teleskoper. Formålet er både uddannelse og almindelige formidling. I programmet bruger man observationstid, som alligevel ikke kunne have været brugt til forskning. De optagelser, som man foretager kan dog også bruges videnskabeligt, og de stilles til rådighed for forskerne igennem ESOs videnskabelige arkiver.

VISTA, som observerer i infrarødt, er verdens største oversigtsteleskop, og VLT Survey Teleskopet er det største teleskop bygget til at overvåge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er en af de største partnere i ALMA, som er det største eksisterende astronomiprojekt. For tiden bygges E-ELT, et 39 m optisk og nærinfrarødt teleskop på Cerro Armazones, tæt ved Paranal. Det bliver "verdens største himmeløje".
