VLT ser ind i Jomfruens øjne

ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) har taget et storslået billede af et smukt, men besynderligt galaksepar, der kaldes Øjnene. Den største af de to, NGC 4438, var engang en spiralgalakse, men er blevet stærkt forvredet af sammenstød med andre galakser i løbet af de seneste få hundrede millioner år. Dette billede er det første fra ESO’s Cosmic Gems-program, et initiativ hvor ESO giver øremærket observationstid til formidlingsformål.

Øjnene befinder sig omkring 50 millioner lysår væk i stjernebilledet Virgo (på dansk Jomfruen) og er adskilt med omkring 100.000 lysår. Navnet Øjnene kommer fra den umiddelbare ensartethed af kernerne i dette galaksepar – to hvide ovaler, der ligner et par glødende øjne i mørket, når de ses gennem et mindre teleskop.

Men selv om de centrale dele af disse to galakser ser ens ud, kunne deres yderområder ikke være mere forskellige. Galaksen nederst til højre, kendt som NGC 4435, er kompakt og lader til at være næsten helt blottet for gas og støv. I modsætning hertil har den store galakse øverst til venstre (NGC 4438) en bane af tilslørende støv, der ses lige under dens kerne. Unge stjerner kan ses til venstre for dens centrum og gas strækker sig mindst ud til kanterne af billedet.

Indholdet af NGC 4438 er blevet revet ud som følge af en voldsom proces: En kollision med en anden galakse. Dette sammenstød har forvredet galaksens spiralform, meget lig det, der kan ske for Mælkevejen, når den støder sammen med sin nabogalakse Andromeda om tre eller fire milliarder år.

NGC 4435 kan være den skyldige. Nogle astronomer mener, at den skade, der er sket på NGC 4438, er et resultat af, at de to galakser for omkring 100 millioner år siden har nærmet sig hinanden ind til en afstand på omtrent 16.000 lysår. Men mens den store af galakserne blev beskadiget, blev den mindste markant mere medtaget af sammenstødet. Tidevandskræfter fra dette sammenstød er formentlig ansvarlige for, at indholdet af NGC 4438 er blevet revet ud, for at reducere NGC 4435’s masse og for at fjerne størstedelen af dens gas og støv.

En anden mulighed er, at den gigantiske, elliptiske galakse Messier 86, der befinder sig længere væk fra Øjnene og ikke er synlig på dette billede, er ansvarlig for den skade, der er sket på NGC 4438. Nyere observationer har fundet tynde tråde af ioniseret brintgas, der forbinder de to store galakser hvilket antyder, at de måske er stødt ind i hinanden i fortiden.

Den elliptiske galakse Messier 86 og Øjnene hører til Virgo-hoben, en meget rig samling af galakser. I så tætbefolkede områder er galaksekollisioner temmelig hyppige, så måske har NGC 4438 lidt under sammenstød med både NGC 4435 og Messier 86.

Dette billede er det første, der er lavet som led i ESO’s Cosmic Gems-program. Det er et nyt initiativ, der skal producere astronomiske billeder til brug for uddannelses- og formidlingsmæssige formål. Programmet gør hovedsagelig brug af observationstiden, når forholdene på himlen ikke er egnede til videnskabelige observationer, og tager billeder af interessante, fascinerende eller visuelt tiltalende objekter. Alle data bliver desuden gjort tilgængelige for professionelle astronomer gennem ESO’s videnskabelige arkiv.

I dette tilfælde, selv om der var nogle skyer på himlen, var atmosfæren usædvanligt stabil, hvilket har gjort billedet så skarpt, at fine detaljer kan ses. Billedet , der er taget med VLT’s FORS2-instrument [1], er en kombination af optagelser gennem to forskellige filtre: Rød (vist i røde farver) og grøn-gul (vist i blå farver), hvor eksponeringstiden var henholdsvis 1.800 sekunder og 1.980 sekunder.

ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 40 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
