Lysstyrkevariationer hos sollignende stjerner: mysteriet bliver større

Astronomer står overfor sokratisk ”uvidenhed”

En omfattende undersøgelse foretaget med ESO’s Very Large Telescope gør et gammelt mysterium i studiet af stjerner, der ligner Solen, større. Usædvanlige – og uforklarede! – årelange variationer i lysstyrken på omkring en tredjedel af alle sollignende stjerner i de sene stadier af deres liv er stadig ikke mulige at forklare. I løbet af de seneste årtier har astronomer budt ind med mange mulige forklaringer, men de nye, omhyggelige observationer modsiger dem alle, og gør kun mysteriet større.

”Astronomer er tilbage i mørket, og for en gangs skyld, nyder vi det ikke,” siger Christine Nicholls fra Mount Stromlo Obervatory, Australien, hovedforfatter til en artikel om undersøgelsen. ”Vi har fået det mest omfattende sæt af observationer til dato for denne gruppe af sollignende stjerner, og de viser klart, at alle de mulige forklaringer på deres usædvanlige adfærd ikke holder.”

Mysteriet undersøgt af holdet går tilbage til 1930’erne og berører omkring en tredjedel af sollignende stjerner i Mælkevejen og andre galakser. Alle stjerner med en masse ligesom Solens, bliver hen imod slutningen af deres liv røde, kolde og meget store lige inden de bliver til hvide dværge. Også kendt som røde kæmper, udviser disse ældre stjerner en meget stærk periodisk variation i deres energiudsendelse over tidsperioder på op til et par år.

”Sådanne variationer menes at være forårsaget af, det vi kalder ’stjernepulsationer’”, siger Nicholls. ”Groft sagt, puster den enorme stjerne sig op og falder sammen, hvorved den lyser klarere og svagere i et regelmæssigt mønster. Men en tredjedel af disse stjerner viser en uforklarlig ekstra periodisk variation på endnu længere tidsskalaer – op til fem år”.

For at finde kilden til denne sekundære variation, overvågede astronomerne 58 stjerner i vores galaktiske nabo, den Store Magellanske Sky, i over to og et halvt år. De erhvervede spektrerne ved at bruge højopløsningsspektrografen FLAMES/GIRAF på ESO’s Very Large Telescope og kombinerede dem med billeder fra andre teleskoper [1] og opnåede derved en imponerende samling af egenskaber for disse variable stjerner.

Enestående datasæt, som det, der er indsamlet af Nicholls og hendes kolleger, viser ofte en vej til at løse en kosmisk gåde ved at indsnævre de mange mulige forklaringer, der er forslået af teoretikere. I dette tilfælde, er observationerne dog uforenelige med alle de hidtil udtænkte modeller og genåbner en sag, som allerede er blevet grundigt debatteret. Takket være denne undersøgelse er astronomer nu bevidste om deres egen ”uvidenhed” – en ægte drivkraft i processen med at søge ny viden, som det siges at den gamle græske filosof Sokrates lærte.

”De nyligt indsamlede data viser, at pulsationerne er en ekstremt usandsynlig forklaring på den ekstra variation”, siger holdleder Peter Wood. ”En anden mulig mekanisme til at skabe lysstyrkevariationer i en stjerne er, hvis stjernen bevæger sig i et dobbeltstjernesystem. Men vores observationer er også stærkt uforenelige med denne hypotese.”

Ved en videre analyse fandt holdet ud af, at uanset hvilken årsag der er til disse uforklarede variationer, så er den også skyld i at kæmpestjernerne udslynger masse i enten klumper eller som en skive, der breder sig ud. ”Der er brug for en Sherlock Holmes for at løse dette meget frustrerende mysterium,” slutter Nicholls.
