Det kosmiske skelet frem i lyset

Astronomer har opsporet en gigantisk og hidtil ukendt samling af galakser, der ligger næsten syv milliarder lysår væk fra os. Opdagelsen, der blev muliggjort ved at anvende to af de kraftigste jordbaserede teleskoper i verden, er den første observation af så fremtrædende galakse-struktur i det fjerne Univers og giver derfor yderligere indblik i det kosmiske netværk og dets dannelse.

”Stof er ikke fordelt jævnt i Universet”, siger Masayuki Tanaka fra ESO, der har stået i spidsen for den nye undersøgelse. ”I vores kosmiske nabolag, dannes stjerner i galakser og galakser danner normalt grupper og hobe af galakser. De mest almindeligt anerkendte kosmologiske teorier forudsiger, at stof i større skala også klumper sig sammen i det såkaldte ”kosmisk netværk”, hvor galakser, som ligger i filamenter, der strækker sig mellem tomrum, skaber en gigantisk tjavset struktur”.

Disse filamenter er millioner af lysår lange og udgør Universets skelet: galakser samles omkring dem, og enorme galaksehobe dannes i deres skæringspunkter, som enorme edderkopper, der lurer efter mere stof, de kan fordøje. Videnskabsfolk kæmper for at afgøre, hvordan de bliver født. Massive filamentstrukturer er ofte blevet observeret i forholdsvis beskedne afstande fra os, men indtil nu har der manglet et solidt bevis for deres eksistens i de mere fjerntliggende dele af Universet.

Holdet ledet af Tanaka opdagede en stor struktur omkring en fjern galaksehob på billeder, de tidligere havde lavet. De har nu brugt to store jordbaserede teleskoper til at studere denne struktur i større detalje, idet de har målt afstandene til alle galakserne, og dermed opbygget et tredimensionelt billede af strukturen. De spektroskopiske observationer blev udført ved hjælp af VIMOS-instrumentet på ESO’s Very Large Telescope og FOCAS på Subaru Telescope, der drives af National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.

Takket være disse og andre observationer, har astronomerne været i stand til at lave en demografisk undersøgelse af denne struktur, og har identificeret flere grupper af galakser omkring den centrale galaksehob. De kunne skelne snesevis af sådanne klumper, der hver er omkring ti gange så tunge som vores egen galakse, Mælkevejen – og nogle helt op til tusind gange tungere – mens de vurderer, at hobens masse er mindst ti tusind gange Mælkevejens masse. Nogle af klumperne mærker den fatale tyngdepåvirkning fra hoben, og vil i sidste ende falde ind i den.

”Det er første gang, at vi har observeret en så rig og fremtrædende struktur i det fjerne Univers”, siger Tanaka. ”Vi kan nu gå fra demografi til sociologi og undersøge, hvordan egenskaberne af galakser er afhængig af deres miljø, på et tidspunkt, hvor Universet kun var to tredjedele af sin nuværende alder.”

Filamentet ligger omkring 6,7 milliarder lysår væk fra os og strækker sig over mindst 60 millioner lysår. Den nyligt afdækkede struktur strækker sig sandsynligvis længere end det område holdet har undersøgt, og derfor er fremtidige observationer allerede planlagt for at få et endeligt mål på dens størrelse.

ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 42 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
