Et kig igennem sløret
Ugens Picture of the Week er et infrarødbillede af Sagittarius B1. Det er et område tæt ved Mælkevejens centrum, og her er det vist ved hjælp af ESOs Very Large Telescope (VLT) i Chile. Vores Mælkevejs centralområde er et spændende sted, tæt befolket med stjerner, og det ser ud som om der her sker mere stjernedannelse end noget andet sted i Mælkevejen. Men indtil videre har vi fundet mindre end 10% af de unge stjerner, som vi forventer i området. Hvor er de andre henne?
Der er er trick: Når vi kigger ind imod centeret, bliver udsynet skjult af skyer af støv og gasarter, som blokerer for lyset fra stjernerne. Med infrarødfølsomme instrumenter kan man se igennem disse skyer. På billedet her, optaget med det infrarødfølsomme instrument HAWK-I på ESOs VLT, får vi mulighed for at se nærmere på området. Hvad viser er hypnotiserende. Myriader af stjerner afsløres. I en nyligt offentliggjort undersøgelse, har et forskerhold ledet af Francisco Nogueras Lara fra MPIA i Heidelberg opdaget, at der i dette område findes et overskud af unge stjerner, som tilsammen har en masse, som er mere end 100 000 gange større end Solens. Det er et afgørende skridt fremad i vore bestræbelser på at finde alle de forventede unge stjerner i de centrale dele af Mælkevejen, så vi bedre kan komme til at forstå, hvordan stjerner udvikler sit i dette særlige miljø.
Billedet stammer fra oversigtsprojektet GALACTICNUCLEUS survey, hvis formål er at optage infrarøde billeder i høj opløsning af galaksens centralområder. Med de kommende ESO-instrumenter ERIS på VLT og MICADO på det fremtidige ESO Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), håber forskerne på at kunne studere stjernerne i større detalje, og dermed få en bedre forståelse af udviklingen i Mælkevejens centralområde.
