Luft fra Antarktis besøger Paranal
Dette smukke panoramabillede af ESOs Paranal-observatorium blev taget den 5. juli 2012, der var en af de tørreste dage nogensinde ved Very Large Telescope. Paranal ligner en ø midt i billedet med enorme skybanker svævende nedenunder, over det fjerne Stillehav.
Den ekstremt lave fugtighed på Paranal i denne periode blev målt med et vanddamps-radiometer ved navn LHATPRO, der overvåger de atmosfæriske forhold for at støtte observationerne, som udføres på observatoriet [1]. Meteorologer fra to chilenske universiteter har fundet årsagen til disse usædvanligt tørre forhold: Højtliggende luft fra Antarktis, der strømmede langt mod nord og dalede ned over Paranal.
Denne koldfront blev hængende over Paranal i mere end 12 timer og var årsagen til den rekordlave fugtighed i luften over observatoriet [2]. Florian Kerber (ESO) og hans kolleger har analyseret dette usædvanlige vejr og har offentliggjort deres resultater i den britiske tidskrift Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, som udkom den 29. januar. Men hvad er der så specialt ved en tør ørken? Det interessante er, at denne grad af tørhed normalt kun opleves i langt større højder fx ved ALMA-observatoriet på Chajnantor-sletten, som ligger 5000 meter over havet. Paranal ligger kun 2635 meter over havet altså kun ca. halvt så højt. Det er bedst at lave Infrarøde observationer, når der kun er lidt vanddamp i luften. Det betyder, at rutinemæssig overvågning med LHATPRO-radiometret kan give astronomerne mulighed for at udnytte fremtidige tørre perioder på Paranal til at lave enestående infrarøde observationer af universet omkring os.
Billedet blev taget af ESOs fotoambassadør Gabriel Brammer, som tilfældigt oplevede solnedgangen umiddelbart før denne tørre periode, og syntes den var usædvanlig klar og smuk. Gabriel arbejder som astronom på ESOs La Silla-Paranal-observatorium. Når han ikke støtter observatoriets drift, studerer han dannelsen og udviklingen af fjerne galakser ved at bruge verdens meste sofistikerede teleskoper og instrumentering, herunder ESOs Very Large Telescope (VLT) og Rumteleskopet Hubble.

[1] The Low Humidity and Temperature Profiling radiometer (LHATPRO), der er bygget af Radiometer Physics GmbH i Tyskland, bruger kraftige spektrallinjer fra visse grundstoffer for at måle indholdet af vand i atmosfæren.
[2] Luftfugtigheden måles i form af vanddamp, der kan blive til nedbør – et udtryk for hvor meget vand atmosfæren indeholder. Det er mængden af vand i en søjle af atmosfæren, hvis det alt sammen faldt som regn. I dette tilfælde blev der målt kun 0,1 mm vanddamp, som kan blive til nedbør – langt under Paranals sædvanlige niveau på 2 mm, som er i sig selv er meget lavt.
