Venus' Bælte over Cerro Paranal

Dette billede viser udsigten til øst fra Paranal-observatoriet få sekunder efter at solen var forsvundet bag horisonten. Den orange glød fra solnedgangen kan ses imod de 1,8-meter VLT hjælpeteleskoper, og den næsten fulde måne hænger på himlen. Men billedet bliver endnu mere interessant takket være et atmosfærisk fænomen, der er kendt som Venus’ Bælte.

Den gråblå skygge over horisonten er Jordens skygge, og lige over den er en lyserødlig glød. Dette fænomen opstår på grund af det rødgjorte lys fra den nedgående sol, der bliver spredt af Jordens atmosfære. Denne atmosfæriske effekt kan ligeledes ses kort før solopgang. En meget lignende effekt kan også observeres under en total solformørkelse.

Teleskoperne, der vises på billedet, er tre af de fire 1,8-meter hjælpeteleskoper, der indkapsles af ultra kompakte mobile bygninger. Disse teleskoper er dedikerede til interferometriske observationer, hvilket kan skabes når to eller flere teleskoper arbejder sammen. De vil danne et virtuelt spejl, og gøre det muligt for astronomer at se meget mindre detaljer end hvis teleskoperne arbejdede uafhængigt af hinanden.
