Almas verden om natten
Denne panoramaudsigt over Chajnantor plateauet, der spænder over omkring 180 grader fra
nord (til venstre) til syd (til højre) viser antennerne i Atacama
Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array (ALMA) spredt ud i et overjordisk landskab.
Nogle velkendte himmellegemer kan ses på nattehimlen bag dem.
Den krystalklare nattehimmel er årsagen til at Chile er hjemsted for, ikke blot
ALMA, men også flere andre astronomiske observatorier.

I forgrunden ses ALMAs 12-meter diameter antenner i aktion. De samarbejder som et
kæmpeteleskop, under observatoriets første fase af videnskabelige observationer.
Yderst til venstre ses, under gul belysning, en klynge af mindre 7-meter
antenner der udgør ALMAs compact array.
Halvmånen, som befinder sig bag kameraet, kaster skarpe skygger
på alle antennerne. På himlen over antennerne, er den mest fremtrædende lyse
"Stjerne" - til venstre på billedet - i virkeligheden planeten Jupiter.
Gasgiganten er det tredje klareste naturlige objekt på nattehimlen, efter
Månen og Venus.
Den Store- og Lille Magellanske Sky kan også tydeligt ses i højre side af
billedet.
Den Store Magellanske Sky ligner en røgsky, lige over antennen længst mod højre.
Den Lille Magellanske Sky er højere på himlen i det øverste højre hjørne.
Begge "skyer" er i virkeligheden uregelmæssige dværggalakser, der kredser om
Mælkevejen, med afstande på omkring 160.000 og 200.000 lysår respektivt.
Den lille langstrakte plamage yderst til venstre i panoramaet, lige til venstre for antennerne i forgrunden,
er Andromeda galaksen.
Denne galakse, som ligger mere end ti gange længere borte end de Magellanske Skyer, er
vores nærmeste større nabogalakse.
Det er også den største galakse i lokale gruppe - gruppen af omkring 30
galakser, som omfatter vores egen - og indeholder ca. en billion
stjerner, mere end dobbelt så mange som Mælkevejen.
Det er den eneste større galakse der er synlig med det blotte øje.
Selvom kun Andromedas mest centrale region der er tydelig i dette billede,
fylder hele galaksen hvad der svarer til 7 fuldmåner ved siden af hinanden
på himlen.

mod en natlig baggrund af stjerner, planeter og himmelske events.
ALMA bygges på Chajnantor plateauet i en højde af 5000 meter.
Observatoriet, der startede "early science" operationer den 30. september 2011,
vil til sidst bestå af 66 antenner, der opererer sammen som en enkelt kæmpeteleskop.
Denne internationale astronomiske facilitet er et partnerskab mellem Europa, Nord
Amerika og Østasien i samarbejde med Chile.
ALMAs konstruktion og drift ledes på vegne af Europa af ESO, på vegne
Nordamerika af National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), og på
vegne af Østasien af National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ).
The Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) organiserer fælles ledelse og
styring af opførelse, ibrugtagning og drift af ALMA.
