En stribe af himlen over VLT
Dette spektakulære cirka 230 graders panorama af ESOs Very Large Telescope (VLT), taget af ESO Photo ambassadør Gerhard Hudepohl, giver os et inspirerende indtryk af et udsnit af himlen, der omfatter både vores nærmeste celeste nabo og stjernehobe hundredvis af lysår væk.
VLT fire store Unit teleskoper dominerer forgrunden.
Med gigantiske spejle 8,2 meter i diameter, giver de os mulighed for at kigge ud i rummet og se objekter fire milliarder gange svagere, end vi kan se med vores øjne alene.
Også synlige er de runde bygninger til fire 1,8 meter hjælpeteleskoper (Auxillery Telescopes), et til venstre for unitteleskoperne og tre til højre.
Dette observatorium har en fremragende beliggenhed på Cerro Paranal i den chilenske Atacama-ørkenen.
Det er så højt, ved 2600 meters højde, at det, der ligner bølgende hav mod vest, i venstre side af billedet, i virkeligheden er skylaget under bjergene.
Stillehavet er faktisk i denne retning, men ligger under skyerne.
Det udsnit af himlen der ses på fotografiet, indeholder et væld af astronomiske objekter, herunder flere, der er velkendte.
Den lyse kugle over tæppet af skyer er faktisk Månen, som oplyser teleskoperne, og himlen.
Snart vil den synke ned under horisonten og et dybere mørke vil dække bjerget.
Lige over Månen er det, der synes at være en klar stjerne, i virkeligheden planeten Jupiter; en stor gaskæmpe, det er et af de lyseste himmellegemer på nattehimlen.
Den stramt grupperede samling af stjerner øverst nær midten af fotografiet er en stjernehob, der kaldes Plejaderne, måske bedre kendt som de Syvstjernen.
Over det andet unitteleskop fra venstre ses den klare stjerne Capella, mens stjernerne Pollux og Castor, som repræsenterer hovederne af Gemini (Tvillingerne), kan ses ovenfor, og lidt til højre for unitteleskopet længst til højre.
Over hjælpeteleskopet i skyggen til højre ses den åbne hob Praesepe, også kendt som Bikuben, eller Messier 44.
Over det, nær toppen af billedet, ses den klare stjerne Procyon.
