Hiding the Sun
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is exactly between the Earth and the Sun. Because the Sun is 400 times bigger than the Moon, and also 400 times further away, the Moon perfectly blocks the main body of the Sun, allowing us to see the solar atmosphere, including wispy prominences. A total solar eclipse will take place over ESO's La Silla Observatory in July 2019!
