Un Viaje a través del Tiempo – Como los Telescopios, y los autos, han cambiado en La Silla
ESO cumple cincuenta este año y para celebrar este importante aniversario les estamos mostrando miradas a su historia. Una vez al mes durante 2012, una especial Fotografía de la Semana, un „Antes y Ahora“, comparación que muestra cómo las cosas han cambiado a través de las décadas en los lugares de los observatorios de La Silla y Paranal, en las oficinas de ESO en Santiago de Chile y en las oficinas centrales en Garching bei München, Alemania.
Estas dos fotografías muestran el Observatorio de La Silla a fines de los 60 y en el día de hoy. Usted también puede examinar las diferencias entre ambas fotografías desplazando el mouse sobre la imagen. Los telescopios no son lo único que ha cambiado; los autos en las fotos también muestran el paso del tiempo. El Volkswagen 1600 Variant en la primera imagen ha sido reemplazado en la segunda fotografía por un Suzuki 4WD. Hoy en día, todos los vehículos ESO en La Silla son blancos, para mejorar su visibilidad de noche.
Ubicado solo en el centro de la fotografía histórica está el telescopio Schmidt de ESO de un metro, que comenzó a operar en 1971. En ese entonces, usaba placas fotográficas para tomar imágenes de gran campo del cielo austral de cuatro grados de extensión – suficientemente grande para que cupiera la Luna llena 64 veces. Las cabañas que bordean el camino a la derecha de la fotografía son donde dormían los astrónomos.
Al acelerar hacia 2011 aparecen otros dos telescopios. A la izquierda está el telescopio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros, que ha estado en operaciones desde 1984. De hecho, su construcción es la razón de porqué la fotografía del día de hoy no pudo ser tomada desde exactamente el mismo lugar! En la cumbre a la derecha está el New Technology Telescope (NTT) comisionado más tarde en 1989. Ambos telescopios han tenido enormes éxitos a través de los años y aun están operativos hoy día. Y las cabañas para los astrónomos han sido reemplazadas mientras tanto por un „hotel“ más confortable en el borde del emplazamiento.
En cuanto al telescopio Schmidt, aun emplazado en el medio, su cámara fotográfica original fue decomisada en Diciembre de 1998, pero sobrevive como un telescopio de proyectos. Está siendo usado para llevar adelante el LaSilla-QUEST Variability survey: una búsqueda de los así llamados objetos fugaces en el cielo austral, tales como los planetas enanos del tamaño de Plutón, o supernovas. Su nueva cámara tiene un mosaico de 112 CCDs, con un total de 160 millones de pixeles – un excelente ejemplo de como la tecnología moderna puede darle a un viejo telescopio un nuevo uso en la vida!
