La región de formación estelar Rho Ophiuchi, donde se ha detectado el peróxido de hidrógeno en el espacio (anotada)
La colorida región de formación de estrellas Rho Ophiuchi, a unos 400 años luz de la Tierra, contiene nubes de gas y polvo cósmicos muy frías (alrededor de -250 grados Celsius) y densas, donde nuevas estrellas están naciendo. Las nubes están compuestas principalmente de hidrógeno, pero contienen trazas de otros productos químicos y son los objetivos principales para los astrónomos que están a la caza de moléculas en el espacio. Usando el telescopio APEX para observar esta región, los astrónomos han descubierto por primera vez moléculas de peróxido de hidrógeno en el espacio interestelar, en el área marcada con el círculo rojo.
Esta también es una región rica para observaciones de aficionados. Rho Ophiuchi es la estrella brillante que se encuentra en la parte superior de la imagen. La brillante estrella amarilla en la parte inferior izquierda es Antares, una de las estrellas más brillantes del cielo. Abajo y a la derecha de Antares está el cúmulo globular Messier 4.
Esta imagen de la región se obtuvo desde el Observatorio de Paranal, observando con un telescopio de 10 cm Takahashi FSQ106Ed f/3.6 y una cámara SBIG STL CCD, utilizando un montaje NJP160. Las imágenes se recogieron a través de tres filtros diferentes (B, V y R) y luego fueron unidas. Fue creada originalmente como parte del proyecto GigaGalaxy Zoom de ESO.
