Aurora around one of the Earth's poles

The spectacular displays known as aurorae occur when sub-atomic particles streaming away from the Sun are directed towards the north and south poles by the Earth's magnetic field. As the particles encounter the atmosphere, they cause gases to glow with characteristic colours, producing the familiar light-show.
