Zicht op verre sterren en sterrenstelsels
Deze met verre sterren en sterrenstelsels bezaaide foto is een deep-field afbeelding gemaakt met de Wide Field Imager (WFI), een camera gemonteerd op de MPG/ESO 2,2-meter telescoop op het La Silla Observatorium in Chili.
De foto werd gemaakt als onderdeel van de COMBO-17-survey. COMBO-17 staat voor Classifying Objects by Medium-Band Observations in 17 filters en is een project waarbij vijf kleine stukjes hemel zijn vastgelegd met behulp van zeventien verschillend gekleurde optische filters. De totale oppervlakte van die 5 velden komt ongeveer overeen met de grootte van de de volle maan. Het project heeft enorme aantallen verre objecten onthuld - en demonstreert maar weer eens hoeveel er nog te ontdekken valt in het heelal.
Het beeld toont een gebied dat ook werd onderzocht in het kader van het FORS Deep Field (FDF). In dit project werden verschillende gebieden van de hemel in tot in detail en diepte onderzocht met behulp van de FORS2-spectrograaf. Dit instrument is momenteel geïnstalleerd op ESO's Very Large Telescope te Paranal, Chili. Bij de WFI-onderzoeken worden veel meer filters gebruikt dan bij de vorige FDF-observaties en wordt naar grotere delen van de hemel gekeken, met als resultaat de beelden zoals hierboven.
Zo'n glimp van het heelal onthult tienduizenden verre sterren, sterrenstelsels en quasars die voorheen buiten ons zicht lagen, en wordt gebruikt voor onderzoek naar gravitatielenzen en de verdeling van donkere materie in sterrenstelsels en clusters.
