Mise en service d'un nouveau laser à Paranal

L'équipe du système de 4 étoiles guide laser (4LGSF) a terminé la mise en service du premier des quatre lasers guides sur le télescope unitaire 4 (UT4) du Très Grand Télescope de l'ESO à Paranal. Ceci est une étape clé dans la construction de l'installation complète d'optique adaptative.

Une des premières photo du laser de 22 watts en cours de lancement, prise par la caméra de pointage laser (LPC) [1], montre l'intense faisceau orange pointé vers un amas globulaire. Une autre photo de la LPC montre le laser a proximité de la planète Saturne.

Le système d'optique adaptative utilise des capteurs pour analyser la turbulence atmosphérique et un miroir déformable intégré dans le télescope pour corriger les distorsions d'image causées par l'atmosphère. Mais plusieurs étoiles ponctuelles lumineuses doivent être à portée de main afin de corriger les effets de la turbulence, et celles-ci doivent être très proche de la cible étudiée dans le ciel.

Trouver plusieurs étoiles naturelles pour ce rôle est peu probable. Donc, pour pouvoir corriger la turbulence atmosphérique partout dans le ciel, pour toutes les cibles possibles de la science, de puissants faisceaux laser sont projetés dans le ciel. Lorsque les faisceaux interagissent avec la couche de sodium dans la haute atmosphère, ils créent des étoiles artificielles. En mesurant les mouvements et les distorsions induites par l'atmosphère sur ces étoiles artificielles, et en faisant de minuscules ajustements au miroir secondaire déformable, le télescope peut produire des images avec beaucoup plus de netteté que ce qui est possible sans optique adaptative.

Lorsqu'il sera achevé en 2016, le système optique adaptative fera de l'UT4 un télescope entièrement adaptatif fournissant des photos corrigée de la turbulence pour tous ses instruments, sans l'ajout de modules d'adaptation et optiques supplémentaires. Le concept est d'un niveau bien plus élevé que la simple installation d'un miroir secondaire déformable puisque les instruments du télescope ont également été optimisés pour bénéficier de cette mise à niveau.

Prochainement, les trois autres étoiles artificielles de guidage laser seront installées en plus de celle qui vient d'être testée. Cela permettra à la turbulence atmosphérique d'être évaluée de façon plus détaillée et permettra au télescope de produire des images encore meilleures.
