ESO wird Partner im IAU-Zentrum für den Schutz des dunklen und ruhigen Himmels

Gestern unterzeichnete die ESO eine Vereinbarung mit dem Zentrum für den Schutz des dunklen und ruhigen Himmels (Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky, CPS) der Internationalen Astronomischen Union (IAU), um ein beitragendes Mitglied zu werden. Die Vereinbarung wurde vom Generaldirektor der ESO, Xavier Barcons, und Piero Benvenuti, dem Direktor des IAU CPS, während einer hochrangigen Veranstaltung zum Schutz astronomischer Standorte in Wien unterzeichnet.
„Diese Unterzeichnung unterstreicht das unerschütterliche Engagement der ESO für den Schutz des Himmels über den Standorten astronomischer Observatorien. Wir sind stolz darauf, uns unseren Partnerinnen und Partnern beim IAU CPS im Kampf gegen Lichtverschmutzung und Satellitenstörungen anzuschließen“, sagte Barcons.
Abgelegene Standorte mit einem ursprünglich dunklen Himmel, die ideal für die meisten astronomischen Beobachtungen sind, sind zunehmend durch Lichtverschmutzung gefährdet, die durch das Wachstum von Städten und Industriekomplexen in der Nähe der Observatorien verursacht wird. Ein akutes Beispiel ist die Bedrohung durch INNA, ein Industrieprojekt, das nur wenige Kilometer von den Teleskopen des ESO-Observatoriums Paranal entfernt entstehen soll. Darüber hinaus ist in den letzten Jahren eine neue Bedrohung hinzugekommen: die große Zahl von Satelliten, die in erdnahe Umlaufbahnen gebracht werden. Diese beeinträchtigen astronomische Beobachtungen sowohl durch ihre Helligkeit als auch durch ihre Übertragungen, welche die Messungen hochempfindlicher Radioteleskope stören können.
Das CPS bringt Astronominnen und Astronomen, Satellitenbetreiber, politische Entscheidungsträger und andere Interessengruppen zusammen, um „die Anstrengungen zu koordinieren und die Stimmen der gesamten globalen astronomischen Gemeinschaft im Hinblick auf den Schutz des dunklen und ruhigen Himmels vor Störungen durch Satellitenkonstellationen zu bündeln“, wie auf ihrer Website dargelegt wird. Die ESO schließt sich nun den beiden Gründungsmitgliedern des Zentrums als formelle Partnerin der Institution an: dem Nationalen Zentrum der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika für bodengebundene optische Astronomie bei Nacht (U.S. National Science Foundation National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory, NSF NOIRLab) und dem SKA-Observatorium (SKAO), einer zwischenstaatlichen Organisation zur Förderung der globalen Zusammenarbeit in der Radioastronomie. Die Vereinbarung bedeutet, dass die ESO Personal und Ressourcen für das IAU CPS bereitstellen wird und gleichzeitig eine aktive Rolle im Entscheidungsprozess des Zentrums einnimmt.
Die Veranstaltung und die Unterzeichnung der Vereinbarung fanden am Rande eines gemeinsamen Workshops der Vereinten Nationen und des SKAO zum Thema „Dunkler und ruhiger Himmel für Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft“ statt.
