Stellarer Rasensprenger
Dieses Bild der Woche zeigt das junge stellare Objekt 244-440 im Orionnebel, beobachtet mit dem Very Large Telescope (VLT) der ESO – das schärfste Bild, das je von diesem Objekt gemacht wurde. Die zittrige violette Linie ist ein Materiestrahl, der von dem Stern ausgestoßen wird, aber warum hat er diese Form?
Sehr junge Sterne sind oft von Scheiben aus Material umgeben, das auf den Stern zufällt. Ein Teil dieses Materials wird oft in starken Jets senkrecht zur Scheibe wieder ausgestoßen. Der S-förmige Strahl von 244-440 lässt vermuten, dass es sich im Zentrum dieses Objekts nicht um einen, sondern um zwei Sterne handelt, die sich umkreisen. Diese Umlaufbewegung verändert periodisch die Ausrichtung des Jets, ähnlich wie bei einem Rasensprenger. Eine andere Möglichkeit ist, dass die starke Strahlung der anderen Sterne in der Orionwolke die Form des Jets verändert.
Die Beobachtungen, die in einer neuen Veröffentlichung unter Federführung von Andrew Kirwan von der Universität Maynooth in Irland präsentiert werden, wurden mit dem Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) am VLT der ESO in Chile aufgenommen. Die Farben Rot, Grün und Blau zeigen die Verteilung von Eisen, Stickstoff bzw. Sauerstoff. Dies ist jedoch nur ein kleiner Teil der von MUSE gesammelten Daten, das Tausende von Bildern in unterschiedlichen Wellenlängen gleichzeitig aufnimmt. So kann man nicht nur die Verteilung vieler verschiedener chemischer Elemente untersuchen, sondern auch deren Bewegung.
Hinzu kommt, dass MUSE am Hauptteleskop 4 des VLT installiert ist, das mit einer verbesserten adaptiven Optik ausgestattet ist, die atmosphärische Turbulenzen korrigiert und so schärfere Bilder als selbst das Hubble-Weltraumteleskop liefert. Diese neuen Beobachtungen werden es daher möglich machen, die Geburt von Sternen in massereichen Gaswolken wie dem Orionnebel in noch nie dagewesenem Detail zu untersuchen.
