Eine Fahrt durch die Zeit - wie sich Teleskope und Autos auf La Silla verändert haben
Die ESO wird in diesem Jahr 50 Jahre alt, und um dieses wichtige Jubiläum zu feiern, werfen wir einen Blick in unsere Vergangenheit. Während des gesamten Jahres wird einmal pro Monat ein spezielles „Damals und Heute“-Bild der Woche illustrieren, wie sich die Dinge auf La Silla, am Paranal-Observatorium, in den ESO-Büros in Santiago de Chile und am Hauptsitz der ESO in Garching bei München über die Jahrzehnte verändert haben.
Diese beiden Fotografien zeigen das La Silla-Observatorium jeweils in den späten 60er Jahren und heute. Im Vergleichsbild lassen sich die Unterschiede direkt mit dem Schiebebalken erkunden. Die Teleskope sind dabei nicht die einzigen Dinge, die sich geändert haben, auch die Fahrzeuge auf den Bildern demonstrieren den Lauf der Zeit. Der Volkswagen 1600 Variant auf dem ersten Bild ist mittlerweile durch einen Suzuki 4WD ersetzt worden, wie man ihn auf dem zweiten Bild sieht. Heutzutage sind alle ESO-Fahrzeuge auf La Silla weiß, damit sie während der Nacht besser sichtbar sind.
In der Bildmitte der historischen Aufnahmen sieht man das 1-Meter-Schmidtteleskop der ESO, das 1971 seinen Betrieb aufgenommen hat, noch alleine stehen. Zur damaligen Zeit wurde es in Kombination mit Glasfotoplatten verwendet, die Großfeldaufnahmen des Südhimmels mit einem Gesichtsfelddurchmesser von vier Grad entstehen ließen – groß genug also, um den Vollmond 64 Mal abzudecken. Die Hütten, die sich auf der rechten Seite des Bildes an der Straße entlangreihen, dienten den Astronomen als Schlafstätte.
Spult man die Zeit zum Jahr 2011 vor, tauchen zwei weitere Teleskope auf. Auf der linken Seite sieht man das MPG/ESO 2,2-Meter-Teleskop, das seit 1984 in Benutzung ist. Tatsächlich ist das Vorhandensein des entsprechenden Gebäudes der Grund dafür, dass das aktuelle Bild nicht exakt von derselben Stelle aufgenommen werden konnte wie die historische Aufnahme. Rechts auf dem Berggipfel befindet sich das New Technology Telescope (NTT), das Ende 1989 mit ersten Testbeobachtungen begonnen hat. Beide Teleskope haben im Lauf der Zeit viele Erfolge erzielt und befinden sich nach wie vor in Betrieb. Nur die Schlafhütten der Astronomen wurden mittlerweile durch ein komfortableres “Hotel” am Rand des Observatoriums ersetzt.
Die alte Plattenkamera des Schmidtteleskops, das sich nach wie vor in der Bildmitte befindet, wurde im Dezember 1998 stillgelegt, das Teleskop selber wird aber als Projektteleskop weiterbetrieben. Zur Zeit führt man damit die LaSilla-QUEST Variability-Himmelsdurchmusterung durch, ein Suchprogramm nach sogenannten Transients am Südhimmel, kurzzeitig auftauchenden Objekten wie zum Beispiel neue Zwergplaneten in Plutogröße oder Supernovae. Seine neue Kamera besteht aus einem Mosaik von 112 CCDs mit insgesamt 160 Millionen Pixeln – ein hervorragendes Beispiel dafür, wie moderne Technik einem alten Teleskop neues Leben einhauchen kann!
