The levelled summit of Cerro Armazones in northern Chile
This panoramic view shows the summit of Cerro Armazones, a 3046-metre peak in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, after it was levelled. This site will be the home of the 39-metre Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which will be the world’s biggest optical telescope. The first stone ceremony for the telescope was attended by the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, on 26 May 2017.
