Milky Way over the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope
This fisheye projection shows the Milky Way arching over the decommissioned Swedish–ESO Submillimetre Telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory. When constructed, this pioneering instrument was the only large sub-millimetre telescope in the southern hemisphere.
However, technology develops quickly in astronomy; the once cutting-edge telescope has been superseded by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the largest ground-based astronomical project in existence.
